Q: What sheen should I use?

Q: What sheen should I use?

A: Generally speaking the higher the sheen level (shine in the paint) the more durable the finished product. It is important to note however that using a lower sheen level (flat or matte) will provide better hiding qualities. Most new construction houses provide a cheap flat paint that will likely be beat up after the move in (or a few month of your kids throwing footballs, toys etc. against the walls). If you are looking for a great paint that will wear well and also hide you can use a ceramic matte paint. A ceramic costs a little more but provides the hiding qualites of a flat with the washability of a satin.
You may also find it important to ask the paint sales people about high sheens with mold prohibitors (like microban) for kitchens and bathrooms.
